Our History

The Ezra Family consists of eight brothers and sisters - all born to Mr Ezra Bairu and Zewdi Habtemicheal. The cultural norm was for the men to take care of the family and run business ventures. Following the customs in 1976, the oldest son Tekie Ezra started a street vending business trading cigarettes and coffee beans until 1980.

He brought his younger brothers, Ghebrengus Ezra, Yohannes Ezra and Huruy Ezra into the venture. Their proximity to the border enabled them to cross to Khartoum, Sudan through Tesenie, Akordet and Keren.

Move to Ethiopia

A short while later, the younger brothers moved to Ethiopia for better opportunities. After several discussions on how to invest their savings, they decided to invest in coffee machines. Mr Tekie, who was in Italy in 1988, was studying and searching for profitable business prospects.

He decided to buy second-hand coffee machines and send them to his brothers in Addis Ababa. Their mechanical and welding knowledge made fabricating and refurbishing the machines an easy task. They sold the coffee machines to restaurants and coffee pubs and increased their earnings. This led to a sales turnover of USD$ 624,000.

Each coffee machine was sold at 20,000 Ethiopian Birr - equivalent to USD$ 4,000.
